GROUNDING

The earth contains its own electric charge which is present in the ground. For safety and stability, everything in the electrical world is connected to it, whether it’s a lamp or a refrigerator. But being grounded also applies to people. When you’re grounded, you feel centered, strong, balanced, calm, peaceful and connected.

With the exception of humans living in industrialized societies, all living things on our planet are connected to the ground’s electric energy. Today we rarely go barefoot outside, many people aren’t even outside in nature every day, like we are meant to. Many of us, live and work above the ground, even far above, meaning that we aren’t absorbing the energy of the earth like we’re supposed to. Most of us are disconnected, ungrounded and not in touch with the earth. Practicing grounding is said to reduce inflammation, pain and stress, improve circulation and balance hormones.

Grounding practices

- Walk barefoot in nature
- Being in nature
- Swimming in the ocean
- Sunshine
- Meditation
- Essential oils like vetiver and sandalwood

I’ve always been told, very specifically, that I need to ground myself, by coaches and other practictioners. I’m a lot of air, meaning that I need the earth to balance out my elements, but still, the need for earth and grounding is not just true for me. It’s true for all of us. We need earth, and the connection to her, to be happy and healthy. Groudning can be as easy as taking off your shoes when you’re outside, or simply starting to go outside in nature, if you don’t usually do. Using essential oils is also a big part of my life, and something I do every day without giving it much thought. The reason I say this is because I once felt that grounding was just one more thing I had to add to my to-do list. It had to be a 20 minute visualization for it to be ‘real’ grounding. Now, not one day goes by without me finding ways to ground myself, not because I force myself to, but because I want to. But it’s not 20 minute visualizations! It’s walking barefoot. Sitting in the sunshine. Reading in the park. Using vetiver on my feet.
