Dry Brushing

Dry brushing is an ancient body treatment technique in the tradition of Ayurveda, same as tongue scraping and oil pulling among others. It's used in many cultures and it's a simple wellness trick to help cleanse your body, inside and out. Your skin, the largest organ in the human body, is an organ of elimination. One third of your body’s toxins are excreted through the skin and dry brushing is said to help unclog pores and excrete toxins that become trapped in the skin.

Potential benefits of dry brushing for face and body

Boost circulation and energy, improve skin tone, stimulate the lymphatic system and helping with lymphatic drainage, exfoliate and refine, aid in the detoxification process, promote good digestion, remove dead skin cells, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, stimulate the connective tissue, reduce dark circles, reduce puffiness, reduce and prevent cellulite, prevent clogged pores, release facial tension.

In collaboration with Pure You, I've tried two brushes from Karmameju, RENEW which is a dry bruch for face, neck and décolletage and BUFF body brush, which is the ideal brush for sensitive skin, both made from sustainable beech and natural bristles.

RENEW is a super gentle dry brush and an effective beauty tool, awakening your face after sleep, improving skin tone and stimulating the lymphatic system, leaving your skin smooth and radiant. Use the face brush on dry skin in the morning before your shower and cleansing routine. As the skin around the eyes is thin and delicate, make sure you use soft strokes and never stretch or pull the skin.

How to Dry Brush Your face and Décolletage

1. Brush from the shoulders towards the middle of your chest.

2. Brush with long strokes down the neck towards the collarbone.

3. Use short upward strokes under the jaw line.

4. Use U-shaped strokes in an upward and outward direction, from the middle and out on your chin and cheeks.

5. Use short and energetic strokes on your upper lip, from the centre of the lip and outward.

6. Brush upwards from the sides and tip of the nose.

7. Brush around the eye and eyebrow area in circular movements.

8. Brush from the outer part of the eye towards the temple.

9. Brush the entire forehead from the centre towards the temples.

BUFF is both effective and yet gentle, with its delicate appearance it really gives my body a healthy glow.

How to Dry Brush Your Body

1. Use before showering or bathing as part of your daily cleansing routine. It's energizing, so do it in the morning if you can.

2. Begin with light, gentle brush strokes and adapt to match the sensitivity of your skin. Start with the the soles of your feet and brush upwards, with straight strokes, always brushing towards the heart.

3. Brush upwards over your legs, thighs, hips and bum.

4. Same with your stomach and sides.

5. Brush the palms of your hands and all the way up towards your shoulders and neck.

6. Brush from the shoulders towards the middle of your chest.

7. Reach your back from whatever position possible.

I'm a big fan of everything cleansing and to help support our body's natural detoxification processes and organs in their often times overworked jobs. Many factors in today's society contribute to a toxic build-up in our bodies, and to help it cleanse in different ways, is always a good thing. That's why I liked the idea of dry brushing, and the potential benefits. I actually noticed results as soon as I finished brushing one area, as I visibly saw a difference on my skin. It looked like both my face and body had more color and overall, looked clearer. I also really felt the energizing effect it had, and it's absolutely going to be a part of my morning routine.

Remember to always drink plenty of water to flush all the toxins out of the body after dry brushing.
